Gampi Paper

Olino Paperworks International B.V.

Description

Gampi paper from the Philippines is a true artisanal treasure. Made from the bark fibres of the Abaca tree – a plant that closely resembles the banana tree – this paper has been valued for centuries for its exceptional strength and natural beauty. Traditionally used for rope and textiles, the long, resilient fibres create a uniquely smooth, silky surface that makes Gampi paper instantly stand out.

To enrich its texture, other natural fibres such as Cogon grass are added. This once-considered “useless” weed has proven to be remarkably suitable for papermaking, resulting in an even more refined and sustainable product.

The production process remains wonderfully traditional: the bark is stripped, boiled and transformed into pulp in large kettles. The mixture is then hand-scooped onto frames, where artisans often sprinkle dried flowers or leaves onto the wet sheets for a beautifully decorative effect. The frames are dried in the sun, after which each sheet is carefully lifted, flattened and inspected. The result is a premium handmade paper, ready to be painted, printed or crafted into elegant products.

Across the Philippines, many small workshops produce Gampi paper, making it not only a special material but also an important source of local income and craftsmanship.

"Himalayan Paper" - from Nepal and Bhutan

Lokta – the Authentic Himalayan Paper
Lokta, also known as Himalayan paper, is one of Nepal’s most treasured handcrafted materials. It is made from the bark of the Daphne Papyracea, a shrub that grows at an altitude of around 2,000 meters in the Himalayas. Because the bark naturally regenerates, no replanting is needed, and the mountain ecosystem remains completely untouched.

The paper is produced through an ancient, labor-intensive, and entirely chemical-free process. This gives Lokta its exceptional qualities: long, extremely strong fibres that far surpass the strength of machine-made paper. Lokta is easy to dye or batik, naturally insect-resistant, and retains its durability for many years. The long fibres also create a subtle, natural sheen that makes each sheet beautifully unique.

Olino’s Lokta paper is crafted by a Nepalese company that employs many women. Their work provides stable income and has significantly improved the living conditions of numerous families. Because Nepal has no seaport, transportation costs are relatively high—but the unmatched craftsmanship and quality make this paper truly exceptional.

Bhutanese Himalayan Paper
Papermaking is an essential part of Bhutanese culture and tradition. Where families once produced this paper at home, a small workshop now continues the craft using the same time-honoured techniques. The primary raw materials are the bark of the Daphne Payri tree and the Edgeworthia shrub, both growing at high altitudes in the Himalayas.

Production Process
The bark is soaked, boiled, and thoroughly rinsed. The fibres are sorted by colour and thickness, then beaten into pulp and mixed with water and hibiscus root—a natural bonding agent. The pulp is spread thinly by hand over wooden or bamboo screens. After the water is pressed out and the sheets are dried, the paper is ready for use.

This traditional paper is exceptionally strong, versatile, and coloured only with natural dyes, making it an eco-friendly product rich in heritage and craftsmanship.
